Abstract : Since the appearance of pine wood nematode (PWN) in Portugal in 1999 Spain launched surveillance and early warning system in the pine forests (over 6 million hectares) and in high-risk areas (sawmills and wood storage sites). As result of this continuous monitoring has been possible to detect since 2008 four isolated outbreaks in the vicinity of the Portugal border, now under eradication. In 2000 a research was launched on vector Monochamus galloprovincialis bioecology allowing in 2007 the design of a kairomonal-pheromonal lure, now used globally as a tool for the management of insect and as new early warning system against possible latent infestations. Now it is being carried out an in depth review of the PWN fighting strategy based on the results of the European project REPHRAME and the conclusions of the EU Task Force on PWN.
