Abstract : H2020 RustWatch (2018-2022) is a European project, led by the University of Aarhus, which aims at developing a new European early warning and control system for yellow, leaf and stem rust in wheat, using a multi-stakeholder and multi-network approach. GEVES is responsible for monitoring races of yellow rust, managing a set of differential hosts implemented in the European VCU trap nurseries, with 80 sites in 18 countries. For all three rusts, the EU VCU network has played an important role in identifying new races or confirming them by estimating the severity of the disease and sending isolates to laboratories for analysis. For yellow rust, an alignment of methodologies of the European laboratories allowed a harmonisation of the nomenclatures, in particular for 4 variants of Warrior (-) renamed as races: Warrior (-), Kalmar/Nemo, Benchmark and Amboise. An expansion of stem rust as well as a diversification of races and clades has been highlighted in the EU, notably in 2021 in France (Clades IV-F and IV- B). For leaf rust, the two genetic families prevalent in France (Fam 166 and 106 314 2) are also predominant in Europe. A database, Wheat Rust Toolbox, has been developed by University of Aarhus, with some public access on the web, notably for EU maps of races or genetic groups and for rust severities.
