Abstract : Five field trials studied a winter oilseed rape-winter wheat rotation. A living mulch (white clover mainly, lucerne or birdfoot trefoil) has been established at the same time as the oilseed rape. Several treatments followed the intercropping period management (stubble cultivator, bare stubble, living mulch chopped or not) and the weed management just before wheat drilling (shallow cultivator in one or two passes, glyphosate at approximately 430 g/ha, chopping). Living mulches had in several trials a small or uneven development before wheat establishment. Their impact on weeds populations during the intercropping period was then poor, as compared with mechanical or chemical intercropping period management. It had a negative impact on weeds populations in the following wheat in two trials : oilseed rape volunteers not totally destroyed at wheat establishment, seeds production by wild buckwheat during the intercropping period and emergence of this weed in the following wheat. In the other trials, these living mulches had no positive impact on weeds population in wheat crop. Living mulches may limit the weeding solutions available in oilseed rape or wheat crop. Weed control may be then be more accurate or it can be sometimes necessary to kill the living mulch as well as weeds. Soil superficial tillage realized during the intercropping period or just before wheat establishment had limited consequences on weeds population in wheat. These trials also showed that living mulches have a real ability to grow again in wheat crop even after one superficial tillage before wheat establishment. It opens the possibility to destroy mechanically weeds before wheat sowing as well as the suppression of living mulches growth.
