Abstract : Maize is a crop that is very sensitive to weed competition, which explains why, despite having one of the lowest TFIs among field crops (total TFI excluding biocontrol 2.6 for corn and 4.6 on average for all field crops - source Agreste 2017), 58% of the total TFI is related to the use of herbicides, whereas for the average field crop this represents only 38% of the total TFI. The integrated protection of corn aims to reduce the use of this category of products by researching innovative weed control techniques that consist in positioning herbicides where they are currently indispensable to control weed competition. With this objective in mind, ARVALIS has evaluated various types of equipment for targeting spraying on previously detected weeds. The evaluation covers both the ability to locate weeds and the ability to spray on identified weeds. The first results obtained make it possible to highlight the points of vigilance to be privileged. Other trials were conducted to evaluate the interest of early localized treatment on the row of corn completed either by hoeing or by a foliar chemical catch-up adapted to the flora present. This evaluation focuses initially on the technical performance of effectiveness on the flora and selectivity on the crop. Whatever the innovations implemented, their evaluation cannot be limited to technical considerations but must also consider the corollary impacts (economic, organizational, environmental, etc.). To do this, the trials were analyzed with the Systerre® tool, which allows a large number of indicators to be obtained and simulations to be carried out. We will then be able to understand how to preserve the technical performance of weed control and what are the counterparts to consider on the farm to achieve this.
