Abstract : In a globalised society the worldwide trade is vital for every country economy and the pallets, crates and dunnage are ever present. These are often made of wood from dead trees that circulate all around the world, and have been associated with the dispersal and introduction of exotic pests and diseases. To rule the commodities circulation the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures were established, where ISPM nº 15 is specific regulation for wood packaging material in international trade. The recent review of the Annex I with the approved treatments includes the fumigation with methyl bromide (MB) and sulphuryl fluoride (SF), and the heat treatment using conventional steam or dry kiln heat chamber (HT) and using dielectric heating (DH). A critical review is made on the efficacy of the approved methods to eliminate the Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and its insect vectors and on the probability of the wood becoming infected again after treatment.
